The North Dorset local plan was adopted on 15 January 2016 and sets out our approach to managing planning development in the district.

Although the LP1 replaces many of the policies from the District-Wide Local Plan (adopted 2003), some policies from the older local plan have been saved. In addition, the Proposals Maps from the Local Plan (2003) are still largely relevant; the main changes being that settlement boundaries from some of the smaller villages have been deleted, and the addition of the Gillingham Strategic Site Allocation. Appendix A of LP1 lists which policies from 2003 have been replaced or retained, and Appendix B lists which settlement boundaries have been retained or deleted.

The North Dorset Local Plan Part 1 (LP1) and associated documents were submitted to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government on 5 December 2014. An Examination in Public took place in March 2015 to consider the soundness of the Plan. The Council received the Inspector's Report on the Examination of the North Dorset Local Plan Part 1 on 17 December 2015.
The Programme Officer for the examination was Mrs Christine Self MIBMS. Planning Inspector Mr David Hogger was appointed to conduct the examination of the North Dorset Local Plan 2011 to 2026 Part 1, to determine whether the Local Plan is sound. We have also recently published the North Dorset Whole Plan Viability and CIL Study which has been included in our evidence base under infrastructure (INF016)
All documents which have been submitted to the Inspector during the examination hearing and those which have been submitted after the hearing sessions are available on the Mid Hearing Documents page. This includes the additional written work requested by the Inspector during the hearing sessions.
The examination hearing sessions took place between Tuesday 10 March and Thursday 19 March 2015.
Consultation on the proposed Main Modifications to the Local Plan Part 1 took place from 24 July to 18 September 2015. Responses received can be viewed on the Main Modifications Consultation Responses page.
The Inspector's Preliminary Findings (MHD049) and draft main Modifications were considered by the full Council at a meeting on 26 June 2015. The additional written work requested by the Inspector, consultation responses to the additional work received from participants and our response to this can be viewed on the Mid Hearing Documents page.
Following the hearing sessions into the Local Plan the Inspector has written to us with his Preliminary Findings (MHD049), advising of issues raised which he considers would be best dealt with as Main Modifications. We consulted on the proposed Main Modifications to the Local Plan from 24 July 2015 to 18 September 2015 and have forwarded all consultation responses to the Inspector.
