Overview

You need a Dorset Council Taxi Driver's Licence if you want to drive a licensed hackney carriage or private hire vehicle in Dorset.

Private Hire Drivers Licence

A private hire driver's licence will allow you to drive a Dorset Council licensed private hire vehicle, however, this type of licence will not allow you to drive:

  • a Dorset Council hackney carriage
  • a private hire vehicle that has been licensed by a different council
  • a hackney vehicle that has been licensed by a different council

Hackney Carriage Drivers Licence

A hackney carriage driver's licence will allow you to drive a Dorset Council licensed hackney carriage vehicle, however, this type of licence will not allow you to drive:

  • a private hire vehicle
  • a private hire vehicle that has been licensed by a different council
  • a hackney vehicle that has been licensed by a different council

Dual Licence

If you want to be able to drive Dorset Council licensed hackney carriages as well as Dorset Council licensed private hire vehicles you will need to apply for a Dual Licence. Choosing a dual licence could save you money because if you need to change your badge or licence type later, you will incur a £16 admin fee.

Breakdown of fees

A one-year hackney carriage or private hire licence costs £163, and a three-year licence costs £192. You will be able to choose the length of licence you require within our online application form. A dual taxi driver's licence costs £192.

There are extra charges for:

  • a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check: £61.50
  • a medical check: between £75 and £100
  • safeguarding awareness training: £37.50
  • a driver assessment: this will be dependent on the instructor you choose

You'll pay for these separately.

Eligibility

To apply for a licence you must:

  • have the right to work in the UK
  • have held a UK driving licence for a year
