Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Training

This training programme is for all drivers who provide transport for passengers in wheelchairs.

It is a half day programme based in both the classroom and a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

The content of the course covers:

• legislation, risk assessments and vehicle safety
• vehicle types - lift or ramp access
• safe working load of the lift or ramp and manual override
• ramp positioning and safe stowing
• ensure wheelchair is correctly positioned and secured
• wheelchair space and layout of vehicle
• safe manoeuvring of the wheelchair
• wheelchair securing equipment
• passenger safety and placement of the seatbelt

This is then followed by the on-vehicle training and checks, checking manufacturer’s instructions, where they are kept and are they being followed.
