Dorset Council takes your privacy seriously and will only keep and use your personal information for reasons law requires or allows. The Council is the data controller for the personal information it holds about you in relation to the promotion and management of tourism. What follows is an explanation of how the Council will use this information; who it will be shared with and how long the Council will keep it.
The personal information the Council holds for this service area
The Council may hold some or all of the following personal information about you:
- For those who have opted to participate in membership of Visit Dorset information Personal information (such as name, address and contact details); and information relating to your membership and payments (such as membership period and type of membership).
The purposes for which that personal information will be used
Your personal information will be used to provide you with the services, products or information that you have requested in connection with your membership package for Visit Dorset. The Council may therefore use your contact details to let you know about: updates connected with this membership.
The Council may also use your contact information to tell you about products, services and offers that may be of interest to you, but it will only do this if you have consented to this:
- promotion and marketing for your business
- invitations to training and events
- Dorset tourism news
- opportunities for funding and grants
- useful information about legislation
In addition, with regards to any special category data ie sensitive personal data, the Council will rely either on your explicit consent or the processing being necessary for the purposes of carrying out its rights or obligations in accordance with the law such as in respect of health and safety.
Non personal business data will also be used for research purposes to establish the economic impact of tourism.
Who the Council may share that personal information with
The Council may also share your personal information with service areas within the Council.
The Council may also share your personal information with service areas within the Council or other relevant organisations for purposes which may include law enforcement.

Finally, you should be aware that the Council has a duty to protect public funds. It may therefore use the personal information for the prevention or detection of fraud and may therefore share this personal information with other bodies for these purposes.
The length of time that the Council may keep your information
The Council will only keep this personal information for as long as is necessary, but generally, this will be no longer than 6 years after your membership contract with the Council has expired; or as required by law.
With respect to bank details provided by you in connection with membership of Visit Dorset, sponsorship or advertising, these will not be kept once your membership has expired.
Your rights
You have certain rights with regard to your personal information, however, not all of these rights will be available to you in all situations, particularly where the processing of your information is necessary for the Council to carry out its duties and powers.
